How to help someone with depression

Trying to help someone who is coping with depression can be both tough and fulfilling. People suffering from depression feel lonely and cut off from the rest of the world. A compassionate family member or friend can really act like a balm. But be careful not to force things on the patient. In case you are too pushy, it can have disastrous consequences.

The first thing to do is to educate yourself concerning depression. Read books on the subject, surf through various sites and attend seminars and talks. While helping a depressed person, gently reassure the depressed person and coax to recognize his or her depression and so that active steps can be taken to get assistance and advice from a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist.

Do help the depressed person by providing all kinds of practical assistance, as you are normal and mentally healthy.

Support the depressed person in every way possible. Since they should be physically fit, exercise with them if possible. Keep calling them to know how they are so that they feel wanted. You can care for the depressed person by proposing to accompany him or her to therapy sessions.

Do not attempt to diagnose the depressive disorder yourself. Don’t take for granted that the person is suffering from depression just because you observe the symptoms of depression.

There are quite a few medical problems that can bring about cause depressive symptoms. Adrenal disorders, adrenal disorders, gastrointestinal problems, liver abnormalities, food allergies, nutritional deficiencies, medication side effects, and the substance abuse and alcoholism are just a few such medical problems that your doctor should analyze minutely.

Be patient and don’t be critical under any circumstances.

The depressed person should not be expected to overcome his or her depression all by himself or herself. They need all our support and encouragement.

Do not lose heart or get discouraged while dealing with a depressed person. Depression can be treated successfully.
